Container Loading Guide for Roof Tiles: Maximize Freight Efficiency and Minimize Damage

A practical framework for importers to optimize container loading of synthetic resin roof tiles — reducing freight cost per square meter and preventing transit damage.

Freight cost is one of the biggest variables in roof tile importing — and container loading efficiency directly controls it. For a bulky, lightweight product like synthetic resin roof tiles, how the container is packed determines whether you're paying freight on air or on product. The difference can be 10–20% on landed cost.

Why Roof Tile Container Loading Is Different

Synthetic resin roof tiles are not dense, stackable boxes. They are long, profiled sheets that nest together but leave air gaps. Their shape creates two problems: wasted cube and point-load damage. The goal is to maximize square meters per container while protecting the product so it arrives in sellable condition.

Container Selection: 40HQ Is Usually the Answer

For resin roof tiles, the 40-foot High Cube container (40HQ) almost always offers the best cost per square meter. The extra height compared to a standard 40GP allows an additional layer of pallets. 20GP containers are rarely efficient for roof tiles unless the order is small.

Palletizing Strategy

Tiles should be bundled by profile and length, then stacked on pallets with even support across the full tile span. Bundles must be strapped tight enough to prevent shifting but not so tight that edges deform. Corner protectors under strapping prevent cutting into tile edges. Weather-resistant wrap is essential for humid transit routes.

Stacking and Void Filling

Stack pallets in layers, with heaviest bundles on the bottom. Use plywood or rigid divider sheets between layers. Fill gaps between pallets and container walls with dunnage — movement at sea is the number one cause of transit damage.

Freight Cost Calculation That Works

Instead of negotiating "freight per container," calculate freight cost per square meter of tile delivered. Take your container freight rate, divide by the number of square meters loaded, and add destination charges. This is the metric that matters for comparing suppliers, routes, and loading strategies.
